Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a number of approach shafts providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their valour," Healey added. "They were among numerous British troops on duty over the festive period. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our security, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
