Toto Wolff Preparing to Divest Shareholding Valuing Mercedes F1 at £4.6 Billion

Toto Wolff is in final negotiations to sell a portion of his shareholding in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

The deal estimates the Mercedes team at £4.6bn – a record for a Formula 1 squad – following the McLaren team was appraised at £3.5 billion in a change of ownership structure last September.

The Austrian executive, who holds one-third of the Mercedes F1 operation, would sell a shareholding approximately 5%.

The 53-year-old will remain as team principal and chief executive officer if the sale goes through.

Shareholder Structure

Remaining partners in the team are Mercedes-Benz and industrial group Ineos, who each also own one-third of the enterprise.

An official representative stated: "We will be making no official statement on the matter. The governance of Mercedes F1 will remain unchanged, and all three partners are dedicated to the ongoing success of Mercedes-Benz in F1."

Valuation Growth

This arrangement would represent a significant increase in worth of the Mercedes team since Ineos bought its share for £208 million in 2022.

This surge reflects the expansion in market values of Formula 1 outfits recently due to the growing popularity of the sport globally.

This was also seen in the success of the F1 movie starring Brad Pitt, which debuted last summer and earned over $630m (£458 million) at the box office.

It is the actor's top-grossing film and the most successful sports film ever released.

Present Performance

Mercedes are runner-up in the team standings, behind McLaren, with three Grands Prix remaining in the current championship.

Mercedes' primary racer George Russell has secured victory in 2 of the 21 races this year and is fourth in the drivers' championship behind McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

The team secured a record eight straight team titles and seven drivers' titles, six won by Lewis Hamilton and one for Nico Rosberg, between 2014 and 2021.
